Poás Volcano National Park

The active crater of this 8.884-foot-high volcano emits steady flow of noxious steam, and the destruction caused by the eruptions is easy to see, weather permitting. But a short walk through the nearby forest leads to an extinct crater, filled with emerald water and surrounded by lush forest, provides a wonderful contrast. Poas is Costa Rica's most popular park, and it has an excellent nature trail through the cloud forest. One of the few accessible active volcanoes in the Americas, Poas is reached by a 45-minute drive north of Alajuela, and is best visited in the morning.
