Tortuguero National Park

This popular park on the northern Caribbean Coast was created to protect an important nesting area for the green turtle, but it also comprises a stretch of the canals, which are called Costa Rica's Amazon, and surrounding rain forest. The park is reached by a boat trip through the canals, which provides an excellent opportunity for viewing birds, crocodiles, sloths, river otters, and if you're lucky, the rare manatee. Aside from the wildlife, Tortuguero is a beautiful and tranquil spot, with palm-lined beaches stretching off as far as the eye can see in both directions and the quiet wonders of the forest and canals.

Tortuguero is one of the most important turtle nesting areas in the world.
