Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge

Stretching down the Caribbean coast south of Puerto Viejo to the border with Panama, this loosely managed refuge contains coral reefs, palm-lined beaches, patches of rain forest and a small mangrove swamp. This refuge surrounds the villages of Manzanillo, which offers some basic accommodations and Gandoca, which is less accessible. The best way to explore the refuge is by following the trail along the coast that heads south out of Manzanillo.
