Carara Biological Reserve

Just a ninety minute drive from San Jose, Carara is easy to visit, and thus very popular. Located near the Pacific coast, on the road to Jaco Beach, Carara is in a transition zone between the dry forests of the northwest and the rain forests of the southern zone. It thus contains a sort of dry/rain forest, which is one of two areas in the country where it is common to see scarlet macaws. Crocodiles live in the Tarcoles River, which borders the park, and there are also lots of monkeys, iguanas, sloths, armadillos and other tropical critters roaming the woods of Carara.
